Modern Two-Tone Half-Square Granny Motif Blanket – Crochet Pattern

A crochet blanket with geometric blue and cream half-square triangle motifs joined to form a modern design, shown with a matching crocheted square.

Introduction

This crochet project features a visually striking and modern blanket composed of classic granny squares, each worked in a two-tone half-square triangle motif. The piece alternates soft blue and creamy white acrylic or cotton yarns to create a crisp geometric effect. The squares are joined in perfectly aligned rows, producing a sophisticated checkerboard of diagonal halves that gives the finished item a clean, contemporary look. Each motif has a pretty texture with a slightly raised, chunky stitch, framed with a smart border. The overall appearance is both cozy and elegant, making it ideal as a bedspread, throw, or home accent. Whether snuggled up for warmth or draped over furniture, this project adds a beautiful handmade touch to any room.

The project is interesting for both its classic technique with a modern twist and its modular construction, which allows for color play and easy customization. The rhythmic stitches and bold shapes offer endless satisfaction as the blanket comes together square by square. You can adjust the blanket size, experiment with different color placements, or even use the motifs to make matching accessories such as pillow covers or coasters.

Project Overview

This blanket is constructed from individual half-square triangle granny squares. Each square is worked in the round, with one diagonal half in blue and the opposite half in white. The squares are bordered with a single color before being whip-stitched, slip stitched, or crocheted together to create the finished blanket. The construction allows for modular assembly and easy adjustment of the final dimensions. The blanket is finished with a simple, uniform border for a polished look.

Skill Level

Advanced Beginner.

While the project mainly uses basic stitches (chain, double crochet, slip stitch), the color changes at diagonals and motif joining introduce a slightly greater challenge than a standard granny square. Familiarity with changing colors and keeping tension even is helpful.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn (Category 4) in two colors:
    • Color A (Light blue): approx. 1200–1500g (depends on blanket size)
    • Color B (Creamy white): approx. 1200–1500g
    • Yarn suggestion: 100% cotton or acrylic for durability and easy care
  • 5.0mm (H-8) crochet hook (or size to obtain gauge)
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and joining squares
  • Sharp scissors
  • Stitch markers (optional, for marking corners or motif halves)
  • Measuring tape

Finished Size

  • Each square: approx. 14 x 14 cm (5.5 x 5.5 inches)
  • Sample blanket shown (9 squares x 10 squares): approx. 126 x 140 cm (49.5 x 55 inches), fits a double or full-sized bed.

To adjust the size, change the number of squares made and joined together.

Gauge

One motif (before border and joining) should measure approx. 14 x 14 cm (5.5 x 5.5 inches) after blocking.

Gauge is not critical but staying close keeps finished size as expected. Adjust hook size up or down if your squares are coming out too large or small.

Stitches and Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sp – space

Important Pattern Notes

  • Chains at the start of a round count as stitches unless stated otherwise.
  • Squares are worked in joined rounds, turning after each round for consistent texture.
  • Color changes for the diagonal are made at the halfway point in each round, changing yarns before joining motifs.
  • Hold the motif with the right side (RS) facing.
  • Use stitch markers to mark the diagonal if needed.
  • Join rounds with a slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain or stitch.

Detailed Crochet Pattern

Part 1: Half-Square Triangle Granny Square Motif

You will need to make as many squares as needed for your required blanket size. The sample size uses 90 squares (9 x 10). Each square half is worked in one color; the other half in the second color.

To Make One Motif (Square):

  • With Color A (blue), make a slip knot and ch 4, join with a sl st to first ch to form a ring. Or, use a magic ring.

Round 1:

  • Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2 (corner), [3 dc in ring, ch 2] three times. Join with a sl st to top of beg ch-3. (4 clusters, 4 ch-2 corners)

Round 2:

  • Turn. Sl st in next 2 sts and into corner sp. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp (first corner made).
  • Ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp, ch 1 – rep 2 more times. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (8 clusters, 4 ch-2 corners, 4 ch-1 sides)

Round 3 (Diagonal Color Change):

  • Turn. Begin as for previous round: sl st into next 2 sts and into corner sp. Switch to Color B (white) at the midpoint corner (see notes below):
  • Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, [3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] to next corner, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner, ch 1.
  • Continue with Color A for half the motif; drop Color A and attach Color B at the next corner to work the remainder in Color B (see step-by-step for neat color change below).
  • Repeat [3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] to next corner, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner, ch 1, [3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] to beg corner. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3.
  • At the end of this round, each diagonal half of the square should be in a different color.
  • Color change tip: At the last yarn over of the dc before the midpoint, switch yarns, finish the stitch with the new color, and continue with Color B.

Rounds 4–6:

  • Repeat as for previous rounds, always turning and keeping each half in its color. Corners: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each, with ch 1 between clusters on the sides. Continue the diagonal color change at the same halfway point, using separate balls/cakes for each color if needed.
  • When the square is 14 x 14 cm or desired size (usually 6 rounds), FO both colors and weave in ends.

Part 2: Motif Border

  • With RS facing, join Color A (or your preferred border color) in any corner sp. Ch 1, sc evenly around motif, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner. Join with sl st to first sc. FO and weave in all ends. Each motif should be the same size before joining.

Part 3: Joining Squares

  • Lay out your motifs in the desired color pattern (alternating the orientation of the half-triangle squares for a checkerboard effect).
  • Join using your preferred method (whipstitch, slip stitch, or single crochet through back loops only) in Color A or B. For a flat and modern effect, use a continuous join-as-you-go (JAYGO) or whipstitch on the WS.
  • Align corners and keep the diagonal lines neat during joining.

Part 4: Blanket Border

  • With RS facing, join Color A in any corner space of the assembled blanket.
  • Round 1: Ch 1, sc around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each blanket corner, and 1 sc in each joining seam. Join with sl st to first sc.
  • Optional: Work a second round in Color B, as above, for a two-toned border. FO and weave in all ends.

Assembly and Finishing

  • Block each motif before joining for uniformity: soak in cool water, gently squeeze out excess, shape and pin each square to desired dimensions, and let dry flat.
  • When all motifs are joined, block the assembled blanket in the same way.
  • Weave in all yarn ends carefully using a tapestry needle on the WS.
  • Straighten the motif diagonal lines and border edges for a crisp, professional finish.

Customization Ideas

  • Alternate Colors: Try gray and mustard, navy and white, or pastel shades for different moods.
  • Change Yarn Weight: Use DK or bulky for a lighter or heavier blanket; adjust hook size.
  • Different Uses: Make fewer squares for a baby blanket, use motifs as pillow covers, coasters, table runners, or wall art.
  • Edging Options: Add a scallop, reverse single crochet, or pompom border for extra flair.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If squares curl, add a round or reduce tension.
  • Check edge stitch counts to keep squares symmetrical.
  • Re-block motifs if they become misshapen during assembly.
  • If motifs are different sizes, adjust your tension or hook for consistency.
  • If color changes look messy, change colors on the final yarn over of the dc before the seam.
  • Loose joins? Try slip stitch join or single crochet join for a firmer seam.

Care Instructions

  • Machine wash gentle cycle (cold or warm water) or hand-wash in mild detergent.
  • Lay flat to dry; reshape when damp.
  • Avoid bleach and high heat drying.

Final Notes

For best results, check the stitch count at every round and ensure your color changes are sharp by always switching yarns on the last yarn over. Adjust tension if needed and block finished motifs for even sizing. Use the photo as a visual layout guide to help plan your color sequence and square placement.
